PEAKMATES (Session I finished on june 19, 2020)
PeakMATES (Mentoring and Tutoring Elementary Students). Our aim is to connect current and former Peak students (both high school and college students) with elementary school students.
For approximately 60 minutes per week--for example, two 30-minute sessions--PeakMATES will meet on FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or Zoom to work together on the younger MATE'S schoolwork, share stories about sports, music, and other interests, and forge connections. If you are a high school or college student who is interested in serving as a Mentor/Tutor or the parent of an elementary school student who would like to set your child up with a Mentor/Tutor, please register here. |
Frequently Asked Questions for Peak High School and College Mentors
Q. What level of commitment is required?
A. To serve as a mentor/tutor, you must be able to commit at least 60 minutes per week for the remainder of the school year to your younger PeakMATE and must commit approximately 20-30 minutes per week to virtual "professional development" meetings with Peak staff and other mentors/tutors.
Q. How do I help my Younger PeakMATE?
A. First, you will be immensely helpful as a tutor. Not only will you offer valuable knowledge and expertise, but also you will provide a valuable service to parents who often have to juggle multiple children, jobs, and family responsibilities. Second, by forging a connection with an elementary-aged child, you will help bring some variation and enjoyment to their day.
Q. How does this benefit me?
A. Beyond the obvious value of contributing to your community, your participation in this program will also likely provide you with a stimulating experience and an opportunity to diversify your new daily routine. Community service hours will be available for those whose high schools have a community service requirement. Lastly, your participation in this program will hopefully provide you with meaningful experiences that could provide fantastic content for future college applications, job interviews, etc...
Q. How do I get access to a younger student's school work / materials?
A. We recommend that in your initial meeting with your PeakMATE and his/her parents, you discuss a system for having the parent or child send you some pictures of any worksheets, projects, or other work. Google Docs and other document-sharing programs will also help you manage these logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions for Parents of Elementary Students
Q. How do we get started?
A. First, register here. Once we find a Mentor/Tutor that we think will be a good fit, we will connect you via email. At that point, we highly recommend an initial 10-minute meeting between PeakMATES and the parent(s) of the younger student. This will give parents an opportunity to help articulate some goals and discuss any logistics of technology, meeting platforms, and sharing copies/photos of school assignments, worksheets, and projects
Q. How do we proceed from there?
A. Ideally, the older MATE will take the initiative in coordinating a schedule (i.e. 2 x 30 minute meetings per week) that works for both PeakMATES. The more information you can provide the Mentor/Tutor, the more successful the partnership will be.
Q. What if an issue arises (i.e. we are having trouble scheduling, etc...)?
A. The good news is that Peak Performance already has a strong relationship with all potential Mentors/Tutors. We've worked with these students on their SAT and ACT preparation and believe we will be in a good position to offer them guidance when needed.
Q. What type of guidance is provided to the Mentors/Tutors to help them support my elementary-aged student?
A. Our aim is to have a weekly Zoom meeting with all Mentors/Tutors to share best practices, brainstorm, and offer support. Our Mentors/Tutors won't be seasoned teachers or professionals, but we do expect them to bring energy, positivity, and a personal connection to their younger MATES.
Q. Is there any cost associated with this program?
A. No, there is no cost. Our goal is to connect motivated Mentors/Tutors with elementary students who are eager for some assistance and guidance during this challenging time.
